Because I’ve followed this route myself, I can describe it accurately for you. I’ll talk through all the parts, including getting there, how to travel, the seasons, budget and what essentials to pack.
🚗 Distance Between Mahabalipuram and Pondicherry
- We traveled about 95 km, give or take some kilometers.
- You can drive along the road in 1.5 to 2 hours normally (without too much traffic).
It’s an easy and enjoyable journey from Pondicherry to Mahabalipuram. You’re heading down the East Coast Road (ECR) and it’s truly one of the most beautiful roads I’ve driven along.
Keep in mind to stop at the scenic spots along ECR; you’ll see how pretty the road looks at sunrise or sunset. On my way, I had a tasty tender coconut near Kalapet.
🚌 How to Travel: Bus, Taxi, or Bike?
I’ve tried all three ways. Each has its own pros and cons.
🚌 1. Bus from Pondicherry to Mahabalipuram
- You can travel by TNSTC Government buses or private buses.
- The journey will cost you ₹70 to ₹150.
- It takes between 2 and 2.5 hours to complete the trip.
- The bus starts at the main Pondicherry Bus Stand.
- Main One: Mahabalipuram Main Bus Stop
✅ Cheap
✅ There are many buses traveling on these routes.
❌ Weekends may be very busy at the zoo.
👉 To get the real vibe of things, ride the bus. You can easily travel without overspending if you’re not short on time.
🚖 2. Taxi or Cab
- Fares: Expect to pay between ₹2000 and ₹2500 every time you travel
- Ways to travel include Ola, Uber or local cabs.
✅ Comfortable
✅ Air-conditioned
❌ Bit pricey if you’re solo
I booked a cab once for a family trip. It was comfy, but pricey. Good option if you’re splitting the fare.
🛵 3. Bike Ride 🛣️
- Renting will cost between ₹400 and ₹700 per day.
- The handout should take no more than 2 hours to read.
✅ Super fun
✅ You control the stops
❌ Tiring during summer
This is my first choice! If you enjoy the feeling of wind on your face, rent out a bicycle in Pondicherry. Guna Bike Rentals made my moving easier and better.
📅 Best Time to Visit Mahabalipuram from Pondicherry
If you’re asking “When should I go?”, here’s what I’ve learned:
☀️ October to March
It’s a good temperature on that stretch. This weather is wonderful for going on walks around the city, heading to the beach and just taking photos.
☀️ April to June
It’s too hot for most today! You might want to skip doing things during the afternoon if you’re not used to the heat.
🌧️ July to September
Monsoon! Roads are slippery, and most outdoor attractions get muddy.
✅ My Pick: December! I visited Mahabalipuram from Pondicherry in December, and the cool sea breeze + clear skies = perfect combo.
🧳 Which Essentials to Take with You
Don’t overpack. Seriously. I’ve been tricked by my emotions just once.
The essential thing you need is this:
- Sunscreen 🧴
- Sunglasses 🕶️
- Power bank 🔋
- Water bottle 💧
- Light snacks
- You’ll also need a cap or hat 🧢
- That ID card works well in these countries (in certain countries, you need to present it).
- You need a decent camera—even a high-quality phone will work.
Similarly, if you’re going from Mahabalipuram to Pondicherry, that checklist works as well.

- A2B or Adyar Ananda Bhavan (in the midpoint of ECR), is a trustworthy choice
- Close to the beach, Le Cafe is where you’ll enjoy coffee and a happy sea feeling.
I sampled masala dosa at Murugan Idli and I am hungry for it yet!

I was stressed from work and my friend sounded me out with, “Bro, why don’t we bike from Pondicherry to Mahabalipuram?” We went as soon as we rented our bike, leaving around 6 AM.
We paused at the coast, took some photos, shared a meal, checked out Shore Temple and were back by the evening. That was one of the best unexpected trips I’ve ever taken.
